When you see a shot, and the sun’s at eleven, and someone’s smoking a cigarette that’s half-smoked, and then you cut away and you cut back, and the sun is just past eleven, and the cigarette has gone down just as much, the reason you have that sense of the continuity of the reality of that duration is that there’s a woman—and it was traditionally a woman’s job—who’s made sure that the cigarette is exactly the right length. This is why everyone who does continuity is a smoker, because they spend all their time smoking it down until it’s the right length!
