Dave Tompkins has contributed to The Wire, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and Oxford American. His first book, How To Wreck A Nice Beach (Melville House, 2010) is a history of the vocoder, from World War II to hip-hop. He is currently working on a natural history of Miami Bass.
